How to install IPTV on Apple TV
By Mi TV Latino Team · Updated on
The Apple TV is one of the most stable devices for IPTV: plenty of processor, a system that does not fill up with junk, and apps that rarely close on their own. Its one drawback is that you cannot install anything outside the App Store, so you depend on what Apple has published. Here is how to set it up and what to do if your preferred app is missing.
Before you start
- Your login details: username, password and server URL. They are in your client area.
- An Apple TV HD or 4K with tvOS up to date. Third-generation models and earlier have no App Store: for those, skip to the end.
- A stable connection: around 10 Mbps for HD, about 25 for 4K. Some Apple TV 4K models have ethernet; if yours does, use it.
1. Install the player
Open the Apple TV App Store and search for Smarters Player Lite. It is the IPTV Smarters build for the Apple ecosystem and the one we recommend.
If you cannot find it, try these names, which are usually available on tvOS:
- iPlayTV
- GSE Smart IPTV
- IPTV Smarters Player
Availability changes by country and by date: it is normal for one to disappear and another to show up. Any of them that supports Xtream Codes will do.
2. Sign in with your details
Open the app and choose the Xtream Codes API login (depending on the app it may be called Xtream Codes login or Add user). Fill in:
- Profile name: whatever you like, it is only a label.
- Username and password: exactly as we sent them, respecting capitals.
- Server URL: complete, with
http://and its port.
Typing with the Apple TV remote is slow and it is where most mistakes happen. A tip: when the Apple TV asks for text, your iPhone offers to type it from the phone keyboard. Accept and paste the details there; it saves you half the errors.
3. Start watching
Once the app finishes downloading the catalogue you will see Live TV for live channels plus the movies and series sections. The programme guide takes a little longer to fill in the first time.
Recommended settings
- Hardware decoding, if the app offers it. The Apple TV has power to spare, but it offloads work and runs cooler.
- Buffer one notch higher if your WiFi is uneven.
- Ethernet if your model has it. Biggest improvement available, and free if you already have the cable.
If something fails
I cannot find any IPTV app in the App Store. Change search terms: try “IPTV”, “Xtream”, “M3U” and the names above. If your store is in a country where they are not published, there is no way to force it from the Apple TV — a Fire TV Stick solves the problem cheaply (guide).
“Invalid credentials” or it will not log in. Almost always the URL half-typed with the remote. Check the port and that there are no spaces. If you can, retype it from the iPhone keyboard.
It logs in but no channel loads. Delete the profile and add it again: the app re-downloads the whole catalogue.
It cuts out every few minutes. That is the connection. We cover it fully in how to fix IPTV buffering.
Third-generation Apple TV or older
Those models have no App Store, so no player can be installed. Your real options are mirroring from the iPhone with AirPlay — fine as a stopgap, but it depends on your WiFi — or moving to a device that can run the app itself. For daily use, the second.
Frequently asked questions
Does the same account work on iPhone and iPad? Yes. Install Smarters Player Lite from the iPhone App Store and sign in with the same details.
How many screens can I have at once? Three on the standard plan, and there are four-screen plans. Each can be on a different channel.
Is the app paid? Some are and some are not, and that payment belongs to the app, not to us. Your account works the same in anything that supports Xtream Codes.
Can I AirPlay from the iPhone to the Apple TV? Yes, but if the Apple TV can run the app itself, it looks better and uses less battery than mirroring.
