How to install IPTV on an Android TV Box

An Android TV Box is the most flexible way to watch IPTV: you install whatever app you like, you get every player setting, and it works the same on any TV with HDMI, whatever year it is from. If your Smart TV no longer receives new apps, this is what brings it back to life cheaply.

Before you start

  • Your login details: username, password and server URL, in your client area.
  • The box connected to the internet. If it has a network port, use it: most cheap boxes have a mediocre WiFi antenna, and that is where 90% of the buffering comes from.
  • Around 10 Mbps for HD and about 25 for 4K.

Certified Android TV or plain Android

Not all boxes are the same, and it changes the route:

  • If your box has the Android TV Play Store (row-based interface, remote with a Google Assistant button), you install the app from the store and you are done.
  • If it is a generic box running plain Android, it may have no Play Store or an incomplete one. In that case you install the APK by hand, which is just as simple.

Option 1: from the Play Store

  1. Open the box Play Store.
  2. Search for IPTV Smarters Pro. If it does not appear, look for TiviMate or XCIPTV, which also support Xtream Codes.
  3. Install and open.

Option 2: install the APK with Downloader

  1. Install Downloader from the Play Store (or side-load it from USB if you have no store).
  2. Go to Settings → Apps → Security & restrictions → Unknown sources and turn the permission on for Downloader. On Android TV the permission is per app, not global.
  3. Open Downloader, type the player APK address and press Go.
  4. When the download finishes, confirm Install.

Sign in with your details

Open the player and choose Login with Xtream Codes API. Fill in a profile name (anything), username, password and the complete server URL with its port. Press Add user and wait for the catalogue to download.

If your app only takes a playlist, use the M3U URL instead of the three fields.

Settings that make the difference

A cheap TV Box with the right settings beats an expensive one configured badly:

  • Hardware decoding. The single most important setting on these devices. Turn it on in the player.
  • Buffer one notch higher if your connection is uneven.
  • Output resolution matching your TV. If your TV is 1080p and the box is outputting 4K, you are burning power for nothing.
  • Clear out the preinstalled junk. Many boxes ship with factory apps that open by themselves and eat memory. Disable them.
  • Reboot it now and then. It sounds like a joke, but these devices pile up processes and a weekly restart is noticeable.

If something fails

I have no Play Store. Install the APK from USB: copy the file to a stick, plug it into the box and open it with the file manager.

“Install blocked from this source”. You did not grant unknown-sources permission for that specific app. On Android TV it is granted app by app.

“Invalid credentials”. Check the server URL: complete, with the port, no trailing space.

It cuts out every few minutes. Before touching anything else, try a network cable. On these devices it is by far the most common cause: how to fix IPTV buffering.

The box gets hot and reboots itself. That is a hardware problem, not the app. Move it away from the TV and the router, and do not leave it shut inside an unventilated cabinet.

Which box should I buy? Any certified Android TV box with 2 GB of RAM and a network port is more than enough. You do not need to spend much.

Will an old box I already own work? If it boots and has 2 GB of RAM, yes. With 1 GB it will struggle once the programme guide is loaded.
